GIPS delays football practice until August 24
(Grand Island) - Organized football practice at Grand Island Senior High is delayed until Aug. 24. Two members of the Islander football staff are quarantined due to COVID-19. One has been confirmed COVID-19 positive and another is quarantined at this time following Central District Health Department and Grand Island Public Schools protocol. The quarantine process is being practiced as a precaution to the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes and coaches.
All other sports and activities will resume as scheduled on Aug. 10. GIPS is working closely with the CDHD for further guidance and specific directions concerning student-athletes.
Grand Island public schools in partnership with the Central District Health Department, has determined that football student-athletes and football coaching staff will quarantine through August 19, returning to school on August 20. Students will receive their lessons online from their teachers during this time. These students will not go into Virtual School since this is a temporary quarantine as described in the GIPS REIMAGINED plan.
It was noted Sunday from Activites Director Cindy Wells going forward all coaches & players will be required to wear a face covering during practices and games. This will also follow for any visiting team that plays a contest in Grand Island. Grand Island football was to open the season Friday, August 28th vs Kearney. That game has been postponed as the two schools look for a possible make up date. The plan as of Sunday for a season opener, stated by Wells, will be Friday, September 4th vs Lincoln Pius X.
